Landscape reclamation
Project Scale
Public Landscape
Date
2013
Location
Scotland
This landscape reclamation project reinterprets a former coal mine in Scotland as a renewed territorial landscape, where the memory of the site is preserved through careful ecological and spatial design. The work begins with a study of the uncovered soils and existing substrates, focusing on pioneer vegetation to shape a resilient and evolving landscape.
Planting is used strategically to open and frame views across the territory, allowing the landscape to be experienced as a sequence of revealed panoramas rather than a single continuous mass. A corten steel belvedere is introduced as a sculptural landmark, offering a vantage point that highlights the existing architectural heritage while creating a strong formal contrast with the natural regeneration of the site.
The project seeks a balance between restoration and identity, using materiality and vegetation to create a landscape that is both sustainable and visually legible, where the past remains present without overwhelming the future.
